McCoy Island Trip

by Vivian Wade

Eleven of us met at Big McCoy Island for a great extended weekend of paddling. The trip, which was led by Ron Coulson, included Nancy Coulson, Brian Rohde, Bill Jackson, Rod Govan, Arend de Boer, Sarka Lhotak, David Ivens, Johanna Wandel, Kaz Kusmierczak and Vivian Wade.

We departed Dillon on Thursday afternoon with a rather dismal weather forecast. However, as it turned out, we enjoyed both good weather and good fellowship.

Ron had set the trip up to combine instruction with more leisurely paddling. On Friday and Saturday mornings, Ron assisted us as we worked on efficient paddling strokes, bracing skills and rescue techniques. Later, David graciously assisted Ron in the instruction, as several of us attempted to roll our kayaks. Thanks to both of you for your patience.

All in all, I would say this was a perfect combination of instruction and just plain fun. Some of the highlights included Brian (re)perfecting his roll, Kaz (almost) perfecting his roll, and Arend (again) perfecting his wet exit.

As usual on these trips, some lively discussions took place over meals, and we enjoyed learning about the paddling trips and life experiences of our fellow kayakers. I also appreciated the advice given regarding kayaking and camping equipment. According to the group, sources of good equipment range from high end outfitters to the rather low end outfitter from which Brian acquired a wonderful stove/pot combination: his local dump.

Thank you Ron and Nancy for the time and energy you put into making this weekend such a success. I hope to join you for trips again next year.

As a new GLSKA member, I would also like to thank all the other leaders of this organization who organized earlier trips I enjoyed this season. We could not have an organization like this without people like Sandy Richardson, John Dewancker and Ron Coulson, who are willing to step forward and assume leadership roles.

Lastly, I would like add that as I have paddled with numerous GLSKA members this year, I have learned something that has enhanced my enjoyment of kayaking from almost everyone, and I‘d like to thank the truly wonderful people I have met in this organization for their guidance and good humour. I look forward to seeing you again on trips in 2010.
