Rendezvous 2019 FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

1  Can I arrive at the site earlier than Friday?
Yes, you can make your own arrangements with the Wasausking Marina and Campground at Oak Point (Tel. 705 746-7212). Please note that GLSKA’s event fee covers camping charges for 1 site, Friday and Saturday nights only.

2  Are electric hook-ups available?
Not on a site-by-site basis, but there are several electrical outlets available, intended for usages such as cellphone recharging etc.

3  Is the campground suitable for RVs?
Not really. You choose your own campsite in a grassy area intended primarily for small-to-medium tents. The area is accessed by a gravel road. Vehicles can be parked near the sites or alongside the road. A few sites can accommodate a minivan or similar camper. Towed trailers and RVs are not suitable.

4  Do I have to be member of GLSKA to attend?
If you are not a member you have 2 choices. Join us (we’d love to have you and it’s only $35 for a year’s membership) or come as the guest of a member. As a guest you will have to sign a waiver of risk for insurance purposes.

5 Do I have to pre-register or can I turn up and pay at the gate?
GLSKA members and guests of members can take their chance that there will be room in the campground. Admission for on-site payment is the regular fee plus $10.

6  If I have to cancel, do you have a refund policy?
Yes, we understand that emergencies happen and life doesn’t always go as planned. If there is a real problem contact by email any board member and let us know the circumstances.

7  Do I have to be an experienced kayaker to enjoy this event?
Not at all! We are well aware that introducing beginners to kayaking is the only way to secure the future of our sport, so all levels of skill will find themselves most welcome.

8  Do you provide kayaks or other equipment?
No, but sea kayaks can be rented from a number of companies in southern Ontario. White Squall Paddling Centre in Nobel, just outside Parry Sound, will by arrangement deliver a rental kayak to the site for you, and collect it at afterwards (Tel. 705 342-5324). You must bring your own tents and camping gear.

9  Are there any stores nearby where I can buy food or gear that I forget to bring?
There is a small convenience store at the marina. If if that does not have what you need then you will need to drive into Parry Sound.

10  Will it be warm enough to swim?
Our end-of-June timing this year means there is a good chance the water will be warmer than usual for this event. On the other hand, it’s been a cold winter! For paddlers it’s always a good idea to dress for the water temperature, not the air temperature –  especially if you plan to participate in skill sessions on the water.

11 How do I get there?
From the intersection of Bowes St. and Great North Rd in Parry Sound go south on the GNR approx. 1 km. Turn right onto Emily St., continue south approx. 3 km (road name changes to Rose Point). Cross single-track swing bridge to Parry Island. Continue on Wasauksing Rd. following GLSKA signs to the Wasauksing Marina at Oak Point – about 20 km of mostly cottage-style road.
