This trip is designed to enjoy long paddles along the two most dramatic sections of Georgian Bay coastline on the Bruce Peninsula, including Bruce National Park, Lion’s Head, and Hope Bay Nature Reserves. Paddling this area is rated for advanced skills due to changeable weather, limited landing opportunities and very cold water. We will meet at 9:30 AM Sunday, June 26, at Lion’s Head Beach. After unloading gear, we will shuttle some cars to Hope Bay Beach (16km) and still launch from Lion’s Head by 10:30 AM for a 27km one way trip. We will stop for lunch and arrive at Hope Bay before 4 PM, at which time we will retrieve vehicles from Lion’s Head and stay in the quiet area at the back of Hope Bay Campground (camping fees apply). Those with energy to spare can hike a beautiful section of Bruce Trail adjacent to the site. After packing up by 8:30 AM Monday morning, we will drive (61km) to Dunk’s Bay and launch by 10 AM paddling southeast to the Grotto and back (24km round trip), making use of the few possible landing sites for refreshment. We should be back at Dunk’s by 3 PM, leaving time to consider dinner options in Tobermory, Lion’s Head, or Wiarton on the way home. This trip is weather dependent and may be modified if the conditions require changes for the group’s safety.
