Fishing Islands – Lake Huron June 10, 2017

The Fishing Islands are an archipelago of over 70 dolomite islands off the western shore of the Bruce Peninsula. They are rich in history, with a number of shipwrecks and the remains of a fishing station from the mid-1800s, interesting geology and nesting colonies of gulls, terns, cormorants, herons and at least one pair of bald eagles. We will put in at the beach in Howdenvale and explore the northern islands, returning to Howdenvale. We will visit the bird colonies and can visit the Gold Hunter and/or Sarah shipwrecks (swimming/diving on them if the water is warm enough) depending upon people’s interests; we can also search for the wreck of the Phoenix. The length of the trip will depend upon the weather and people’s desires, but will probably be about 15-20 kilometres.
