There have been instances where kayakers launching for trips on eastern Georgian Bay are not paying, showing up late at night – leaving garbage. In the summer I wrote, in a brief item that appeared on the News page at the GLSKA website, that if this continues, there will be fewer opportunities to access Georgian Bay and we’ll only have our collective selves to blame. It is really important that paddlers respect small local businesses. A motor boat launching at a ramp pays $10 or $15 one way and takes far less time on the ramp than a kayak does. We have been paying very low fees for a long time (usually $2 in and out) and it’s time kayakers started paying their fair share. Please don’t be surprised to see launch fees in the order of $5 one way; and please don’t whine about it. Also, if you are arriving late – call ahead! It’s time we made it profitable for small businesses to provide a service so that these access points will be here for generations to come. I was going to expand on those comments and write a rant about kayakers and how they should start to pony up and pay their fair share at local marinas and private parking lots – but, upon reflection, I don’t really feel that is needed. My sense is we’ve come of age as a paddling fraternity – and the days of trying to get off scot-free at local put-ins are over. Those who still try to nickel and dime their way onto the Bay will always be with us, and like any sport – there will be boneheads. For the vast majority – my hat goes off to you – bald head and all, and a big thanks. On a bigger note – I want to tell you about our adventures in campsite stewardship out on the islands this summer. For sure, wilderness camps get used heavily during the paddling season – and we’ve dug our fair share of new holes for the outhouses. But, there hasn’t been one traditional kayaking site with significant garbage or messes to clean up. Our job is simpler if not smellier – and that’s just to keep the outhouses clean and functioning. It’s your job too – so if you encounter an outhouse that just needs closing – then close it! If you can, dig another or let us know and we’ll do it. Way to go everyone – next time you are “out there” raise a fraternal glass of beer to yourselves and say, “Good job.” None of us are perfect, but it sure seems like we’re trying!
