Killbear Provincial Park – Parry Sound / Georgian Bay (TRIP IS FULL)
Killbear Provincial Park
Dates: May 23, 2025 – May 26, 2025
Trip Organizer(s): Victoria Best (victoriaahb@yahoo.ca) and Kim Gregor (girl8201@rogers.com)
Trip Type: Base camp / Day Trips
Group Size: Maximum 20 participants
GLSKA trip classification: B-2 and C-2
Trip Description:
Meet at 11:00 am on Friday, May 23 at the parking area adjacent to the beach and Campsites 565 and 569 of the tear-drop loop in the Harold Point Campground in Killbear Provincial Park (PP).
Killbear PP will be our base for day trips exploring the numerous bays and islands in the Parry Sound area. Killbear PP combines sandy beaches typical of the Great Lakes with the rock ridges and pines of the Canadian Shield.
This is an opportunity to enjoy the comradery of group trips combined with the luxury of car camping. Consider joining us if you are comfortable paddling in ½ meter waves for 20 km and are capable of executing self and assisted rescues. Novice paddlers are welcome but must be capable of executing self and assisted rescues. A current membership in GLSKA is required. Due to the water temperature of Parry Sound in May, wet or dry suits and clothing for colder and potentially inclement weather are required. Participants are responsible for making campsite reservation arrangements and bringing own gear and supplies.
Full day organized trips are planned for Saturday and Sunday. Three-hour semi-organized trips may be possible on Friday and Monday. The group may split into faster/longer trips and slower/shorter trips. In the event of foul weather, we can enjoy the Visitor Centre & Friends Nature Shoppe and walk the trails of Killbear Park.
Notes:
New for 2025: Killbear PP will no longer reserve a block of campsites as they have in previous years for this trip. Campsites can only be reserved by individuals. 2024 was the last year that trip organizers could book a site for you and a friend to share. We recommend that you book your site between site 556 and site 580, five months in advance (ie. on December 23, 2024 or soon after) of this trip so you get a site near the beach.
Campsites can be reserved as early as 5 months in advance on-line at https://reservations.ontarioparks.ca/ or by phone at 1-888-668-7275. Try using GLSKA’s private Facebook page to find a fellow Killbear kayaker to share your site. You are encouraged to bring a bug shelter, if you have one, because biting insects will be present. Drinking water and vault toilets are nearby and a comfort station equipped with showers is a ten-minute walk or five-minute drive from our sites.
