Trip Description:
Day 1: Launch at Mowat Landing on Montreal River on 10 August at 10:30am and paddle south to the Mattawapika Dam then west on Lady Evelyn Lake, find a suitable camp spot for the night (20-25K).
Please note: There is a 270M portage over the Mattawapika Dam approx. 1.2K after the launch. A boat shuttle is available for a fee ($20/shuttle @ 3 kayaks in 2024) to transport the kayaks past the dam up to Lady Evelyn Lake.
Day 2: Continue on Lady Evelyn Lake to Lady Evelyn PP and find a camp spot in the Sucker Gut Lake / Lake Hobart area (20-25K)
Day 3: Paddle to Tupper Lake to the Maple Mountain trail access, hike up Maple Mountain (3.3K / 1.5hrs one way) enjoy the blueberries on top and return to the previous night’s campsite (5-10K)
Day 4: Paddle back to Lady Evelyn Lake and head south towards Diamond Lake, find a suitable
camp spot for two nights (20-25K)
Day 5: Spend the day exploring the south end of Lady Evelyn Lake and Diamond Lake area (short
hop over / lining to Diamond Lake required), return to the previous nights campsite.
Day 6: Paddle back on Lady Evelyn Lake towards the boat shuttle area and find a camp spot for the
night. (20-25K)
Day 7: Paddle to the boat shuttle and final paddle to the put in location(10-15K)
Notes:
GLSKA trip classification: C-2, C = Strenuous: Daily paddling typically more than 5 hours, with distances of 20 kilometres or more. 2 = Intermediate: Requires basic paddling skills including the ability to brace, self-rescue, and participate in assisted rescues, comfortable in one-metre waves. Mostly protected waters, some difficult landings, and some sheltered spots for resting.
Please note: This trip is all paddling within an inland lake system with open water crossings of up to 2K. Paddling pace 6-8K/hr for up to two hours continuously. Approximate daily paddling distance up to 25K. Part of the trip will require back country permits for 3-4 nights for Lady Evelyn-Smoothwater PP. (Ontario Parks online reservation, one permit required per night for the group)
Meeting point: Meet on 10 August at 8:30am at Finlayson PP office parking lot then drive to Mowat Landing 1hr north from Temagami to the put in. Parking is available at Mowat landing and was free in 2024. Or if you prefer to drive directly to Mowat Landing will meet there for the launch at 10:30am.
