Trip Type: Wilderness Camping
Group Size: Maximum 9 participants
GLSKA trip classification: B2

Trip Description:

Meet at 11am on June 20th for a noon launch from Pete’s Place in the Massasauga Provincial Park. After launching we will paddle about 10 km to Sharp Island where we will set up our base camp. Trip ends at Pete’s Place early in the afternoon on the 24th . Distance paddled each day will depend on paddling & weather conditions.

This trip is ideal for new GLSKA members who have taken a kayaking course and want to practice their skills. The trip is not too far, not too fast, but still requires good paddling and camping skills. We will stay in sheltered waters for the most part but participants should be prepared to paddle distances of 20 km or more in six hours and be comfortable paddling in 3/4 meter waves and make 3 km open crossings.

Participants must have practiced a wet exit and re-entry within the last twelve months. We don’t offer instruction; however, you will have time to practice your kayaking skills. New to GLSKA? Here is an article that can help you prepare for this trip: https://glska.com/going-on-a-glska-trip/#more-2801

Notes:

Bring your own kayaks and safety equipment, camping gear, food and supplies. Consider
adding a wet or dry suit to your gear list as the water temperatures of Georgian Bay in June
can still be cold. You are encouraged to bring your own map/chart and compass to practice
your navigation skills.

Be prepared for rock launching and landings. Help carry boats from cars to launch spot. At
the launch, please unload promptly and remove your vehicle from the launch area as soon as
possible. Purchase your vehicle parking permit at the park entrance. Non-refundable
camping fees will be collected in advance.

We have three campsites reserved in the Sharp Island group for use as our base camp for 5
days of kayaking. Each site comes equipped with a picnic table and a privy style vault toilet.
The park website does not indicate that a food storage bin can be found on these sites. We
adhere to the ‘Save the Trees and See the Stars’ philosophy and therefore do not burn
firewood for heating or cooking on our trips.
