Thanks to everyone for making the Massassauga July 11-13 trip really fun!
And to the weather gods for making the weather a mix of great and manageable. !
Here’s a short list the trip highlights for me:
- Ralph’s amazing campsite selection: 328 had perfect hammock trees and a quintessential Canadian Shield aesthetic, 329 had the best set up for campfire conversations plus the all-important thunderbox, and 330 had enough tent spots to fit all of us in
- Nino’s navigation instructions (I definitely need to take some more formal courses in case we ever need to find another shipwreck)
- Sharon’s, Ursula’s and Maria’s willingness to put up with me learning to navigate (the hard way)
- Ursula’s kale/carrot/cabbage salad with mustard dressing and finding a club of
campers with similar food restrictions - Hanging out on Wreck Island in the sun instead of going for fish and chips
- Getting to try out everyone’s boats
- Staying dry under my tarp
- The amazingly thick fog on Sunday, and the master navigators we had with us (would have been fog-bound otherwise)
- Successfully packing a kayak for the first time
- Making a bunch of new paddling friends.
Since then, Ursula and I went back and found that elusive shortcut from Wreck Island to the inner bay. Having a compass this time definitely helped, although the inukshuk was also helpful. We also checked out a bunch of other campsites in the area for the future. Some great ones but we also heard some warnings about active bears on the 400 series and 500 series of sites. !
A couple of you folks asked for the recipe for my everything-free (no dairy, no gluten, no eggs) protein cookies. It’s from the Protein Powder Chef website.
½ cup pecans
½ cup dates
¼ cup vanilla rice protein powder (the brand I use is Sun Warrior Raw Vegan Vanilla Rice Protein Powder with stevia)
½ cup apple sauce
1 egg (but I replaced it with 1 tbsp oil, 2 tbsp water and 2 tbsp baking powder)
1 tbsp coconut flour
1 tbsp cinnamon !
Bake at 350 for 15 minutes !
