GLSKA has been presented with the first option to participate in the clinics listed below. These clinics are being proposed for the weekend of Saturday and Sunday June 15 & 16th, 2019. These programs will be held in south Mississauga near Port Credit. One course will be offered per day and the cost will be $125 (9:00 – 5:00). These clinics are being offered by Wayne Horodowich, an accomplished west coast instructor with an extensive teaching history. A description of Wayne’s accomplishments and a link to his web site are listed at the bottom of this email.
It is important that if you want to participate in these clinics you need to make a commitment now. Please email organizer Ralph Gardave to secure a spot in one or both clinics. After commitments from GLSKA members have been determined any unfilled clinic spaces will likely be made available to other kayakers in the GTA.
Wayne’s description of the clinics:
Bracing Clinic
Most bracing classes focus on the slap brace. I believe the slap brace is not the most effective brace for paddlers who are learning how to brace. The slap brace is an “all or nothing at all proposition.” Using sweep braces is a much more effective and reliable way to brace, especially for those learning how to brace.
Bracing consists of two major components. One is blade placement and the other is body/boat recovery. I have developed a teaching sequence that focuses on these two components. The success rate for students in the clinic is very high. There is a portion of the day where the students will be in the water; so dressing for immersion is important.
Guiding Necessities Clinic
As Director of Adventure Programs for UC Santa Barbara for 29 years I have accumulated the collective experience of my trip leading and those of my staff. I have documented over 1,000 post trip reviews. As a result I have developed a concise set of skills that focus on the most frequent problems we have experienced on kayaking trips and classes. This clinic is designed for those who lead or would like to lead club trips.
Our one-day on-water clinic focuses on effective capsize recoveries, towing, short distance transfers, equipment review and more. We also focus on setting reasonable and accurate expectations to help avoid incidents &/or accidents. It is important to understand that taking a one day clinic is not enough to make you a guide. This clinic will help you realize some of the key skills you will need to develop if you wish to lead trips.
Wayne Horodowich is an experienced paddler, educator and adventurer. Wayne is the founder of the University of Sea Kayaking (USK), an organization for the promotion of sea kayaking education www.useakayak.org. Wayne is an ACA Instructor Trainer and a BCU Coach. Wayne developed the “Leadership Training Program” which he used to train over one thousand guides. He was captain of the U.S. Surf Kayaking Team in 1991 & 1993 during the World Surf Kayaking Competitions in Thurso Scotland and Santa Cruz California.
Wayne currently resides in the Seattle Washington area and travels around North America teaching clinics to help paddlers become more efficient and improve their skills. His clinics are a culmination of his 35 years of kayaking experience along with the collective experience of numerous kayaking instructors Wayne has worked with over the years. As for his clinics, former students have found USK’s Bracing Clinic unique and a highly successful approach to staying upright. The Guide Necessities clinic is a collection of thirty years of techniques that have been used by guides/instructors responding to challenges that have occurred during the outing.
