Proposed Wiikwemkoong Boundary Islands Transfer

The Ontario government has released its proposed settlement of the Wiikwemkoong claim for the loss of its ancestral land today known as Fitzwilliam Island. The proposal is that the Wiikwe be given financial compensation plus the whole of Prince Edward Island and pretty well all other Crown land islands from Killarney to the French River.  The Wiikwe lost their land in what is now widely thought to be an unfair deal, but the most obvious solution of restoring this land to them is not thought to be possible as Fitzwilliam Island is now privately owned.  It should be noted that the Wiikwe  make no claim that Prince Edward Island formed part of their historical territory. They have also refused to give any undertaking as to what, if any, public access will be allowed should they gain ownership to these lands. The initial proposal, published about two years ago prior to negotiations attracted a wide range of criticism from paddlers, recreational boaters and local property owners. In its recent release of what it hopes will be the final proposal these concerns have been ignored by the Ontario government in favour of obtaining a settlement of some sort.

Many in the  paddling and recreational communities are sympathetic to the historical wrong that was inflicted on the Wiikwe but feel strongly that compounding one wrong with another is a poor solution – a better approach would be to keep the lands in public trust and protected from development,  perhaps by adding them to Killarney Park, thus allowing continued access and enjoyment  by not only First Nations people, but all the other people in Canada.

But time is running out. The deadline for public comment is August 11, 2017.  If enough people speak up, the government may listen.  A link to the draft proposal is given below. To have your voice heard:
