Rendezvous 2012 was my first venture into sea kayaking and I had a marvellous time. The setting, camaraderie, instruction, entertainment, and games were all great fun. I loved being part of a community of paddlers in such a beautiful location. If you have yet to experience Rendezvous, I would highly recommend attending next year.
I began river paddling on the Saugeen, Beaver and Maitland Rivers 4 seasons ago. I’ve had many gentle floats through beautiful fields, forests and wetlands in Bruce, Grey and Huron Counties in a little 9’ Dagger boat named “Ta Da.” The view of landscapes from the rivers is such a unique vantage point; quite different than whizzing by on a highway! River paddling connects me to the lands I call home, and keeps me comfortably close to dry ground.
This year I was ready to begin exploring bigger water. I had the good fortune to meet Paul (PK) Thompson, an Owen Sound GLSKA member, through Tai Chi. He invited me to Rendezvous and was wonderfully supportive and encouraging throughout the weekend; thanks, Paul. White Squall staff were friendly and their services were excellent and cost-effective; it was so helpful that equipment was delivered to and from the campsite. The whole organization of the event was well-coordinated; great job!
I learned lots and enjoyed the weekend immensely but these were the special highlights:
- The central fire pit and circle and the potluck really encouraged socializing – I met new paddle partners;
- Relaxed and welcome feeling of whole event was very inclusive – I felt comfortable in trying new skills in supportive community;
- Paddling among the islands felt both adventurous and safe;
- Ed Wong’s workshop was an easy paddle with wet exit and rescue skills practice – I was thrilled to discover I could get out of and into my kayak!
- The entertainment program was a lovely mix of humour with Richard Knechtel, and a more serious ecological and spiritual message from the First Nations ladies;
- The Olympic Games were participatory and silly fun – I loved them!
In all, I am very grateful to all the folks who worked to make Rendezvous 2012 happen; thanks! The whole experience was quite magical for me. I am still loving my river trips but also gaining competence and confidence for larger water adventures. I hope to meet you all at Rendezvous 2013!
