Slate Islands, Lake Superior 9 -15 July 2018 (paddling days 11-14)

The purpose of the trip is to enjoy circumnavigating and exploring by kayak the Slate Islands, approx. 12 km SE of Terrace Bay in Lake Superior.  Superior is awesome and unpredictable, so the skills are classified at level 3 even though the group will be very cautious considering the temperature of the water. Participants will take a shuttle out of Terrace Bay since the group will be approx.12 km out from shore this eliminates a possible wait-out period in Terrace Bay forsuitable kayaking conditions and return by shuttle. This allows to explore the Slate Islands in relative safety given the conditions of Superior.  The cost of the shuttle out/back would be approx. $125 per person.
Further, the Slate Islands are also home to a good size natural woodland caribou herd which is unusual for Ontario. So the second purpose of the trip is to hike and photograph / observe the woodland caribou. For the trip leader it is a significant part of the trip and the trip leader hopes that others would like to spend some dedicated time to finding and photographing the caribou in this natural environment too. This will require some hiking, quietly sitting and observing. Participation is not a must.
Terrace Bay is approx. an 11 h drive from southern Ontario. People could meet the trip leader at his home in Gravenhurst late July 9. The gear would be put into/on 3 vehicles and the group would depart approx. 6 am July 10 to drive to Terrace Bay.  The night of July 10 would be spend in Terrace Bay with the boat shuttle out first thing July 11. The group would shuttle back early on July 15 and drive south. Participants will work out the details.
