Snake-Big McCoy-Shawanaga – Georgian Bay: July 18-21, 2024

Trip Description:
Launch on Thursday 18 July from Snug Harbour and set up camp for one night on Snake Island. You can arrive anytime but should leave Snug Harbour by 7:00 PM to ensure you have sufficient daylight to make the crossing to Snake Island by 9:00PM. I will escort a group from Snug Harbour to Snake Island at 1:00 PM. The distance from Snug Harbour to Snake Island is approximately 5 km. On Friday 19 July we will leave Snake Island at approximately 9:00AM and paddle up the Mink-McCoy archipelago and camp at Big McCoy Island. The distance from Snake Island to Big McCoy Island is approximately 16 km. On Saturday July 20 we will leave Big McCoy Island at approximately 9:00AM and paddle up the western shores of Hertzberg and Shawanaga Islands, paddle through Shawanaga Island, and camp on the eastern shore of Shawanaga Island. The distance from Big McCoy Island to the Shawanaga Island camp site is approximately 20 km. On Sunday we will leave Shawanaga Island at approximately 9:00AM and paddle back to Snug Harbour. The distance from Shawanaga Island back to Snug Harbour is approximately 16 km.

Notes:
Participants will be expected to be able to maintain a speed of 6 km/hr. The trip involves open water crossings during which you may encounter winds up to 15 kt (28 km/h) and 1 m waves. Depending on wind direction, water temperatures can vary by up to 10°C so participants need to bring adequate protection.

My plan is to have lunch at Gilly’s at Snug Harbour on Sunday and anyone that is interested can join me. They do not take reservations.

Parking is available for $10/day at Gilly’s.
There is no rain date. Only those serious about participating should apply.
