Trip Type: Wilderness Camping
Group Size: 8 participants maximum
GLSKA trip classification: C-3
Trip Description:
The trip takes place on the west coast of Canada just south of Ucluelet in the Broken Group Islands. Participants will need to find their own way to Secret Beach Campground by September 4th. This involves a flight to Nanaimo and a car rental from Nanaimo to Secret Beach near Ucluelet. Participants who prebooked their kayak rental (ca. $70/day) with Broken Islands Lodge, would meet the shuttle to the lodge on the morning of September 5 at the Secret Beach Campground wharf. Parking for vehicles can be arranged for the duration of the trip.
After arriving at the lodge, participants would load all their gear in their assigned kayak. Once everyone had their kayak loaded, we would paddle to the first of three islands for the night where we would stay for two nights exploring the local area. Nights three and four and five and six would be spent on two different islands. To catch the shuttle from Broken Islands Lodge back to the Secret Beach wharf at the end of the trip, participants would need to return to Broken Islands Lodge by 9:00AM. The cost per night per individual on the Broken Group Islands is approximately $15.00. As there is no freshwater available on the islands, individuals would need to bring enough freshwater for the duration of the trip.
Only those serious about participating should submit an indication of their interest at this time. If interest is sufficient, the trip with additional details will be posted at a later date. Participants will be expected to be able to maintain a speed of 6 km/hr. The trip involves open ocean water crossings during which you may encounter winds up to 15 kt (28 km/h) and 1 m waves. In the event of excessive waves and/or wind we will take a shore day if out on an island. If this occurs on the day of departure, a shuttle can be arranged from
Broken Islands Lodge to the island. Water temperatures average 10-15°C so a dry suit is mandatory. Potential participants may need to pass an open water competency test during the summer in order to be considered for the trip. This will involve distances of over 10 km in 15 kt winds maintaining a speed of at least 6 km/hr.
