A Journey North

Flowerpot Island

by Marti Uher

I have always loved the Bruce Peninsula. Perhaps this is due in part to fond childhood memories of taking summer trips along the shores of Lake Huron with the destination being Tobermory or a ferry crossing to Manitoulin Island. My grandparents, from Holland, would make a biannual trip to Canada and invariably we would end up in the north as my father wanted to proudly show them the rural landscape of where he had settled as an immigrant farmer. Though my father’s initial struggles to settle the land along the shores of Lake Huron, near Goderich, were fraught with long hours working in the salt mine, and running a 100 acre farm, he somehow always made a little time to appease that adventurous spirit that he had. He couldn’t wait to head north with kids and in-laws in tow.

Five Days on the Sea of Cortez – Mexico

by Mark Noppe

Sea of Cortez, Baja, Mexico

In February 2009, I paddled beautiful green and blue waters for 5 days and camped on white sandy beaches for 4 nights, exploring a chain of uninhabited desert islands in the Sea of Cortez, off the south east coast of Baja California Sur, Mexico. I stopped to swim and snorkel amongst sea lions, whale sharks, and colourful schools of fish. Every day was sunny and 25 to 30 C. It was a leisurely, solo winter adventure, and an economical and active alternative to a resort style vacation.

GLSKA New Trippers Trip

Massassauga Park: June 20 – June 22

by Sally Dobson

We drove through driving rain but the rain stopped as we readied for launch at 11:45 a.m. – amongst clouds of mosquitoes. Under Dave Beckett’s gentle and expert guidance, and the assistance of his friend, Ed Irwin, 6 of us (Gerry Croney, Jens Truebenbach, Paula Huber, Barry Butcher, Arend de Boer and myself, Sally Dobson) paddled and made our way to a great campsite. It was sunny and warm as we set up tents. Ed offered to take anyone interested on a “short paddle” before dinner – those who did learned a new definition of “short” and were thereafter cautious! Over dinner preparations, we unabashedly examined and questioned each other about gear, packing and cooking tips and discussed the advantages and disadvantages of various travel reward systems. (Some shared that their partners were “Holiday Inn” rather than kayak tripping-type travelers.) We learned a new acronym from Arend: FOF – Friendly Old Fellow. There was a lovely generosity of spirit and sharing of food, tips and stories.

Everything Ron and Nancy promised in their GLSKA trip listing happened over the nine-day trip. We had plenty of fog, big seas, lots of surf landings and launches and some long days on the water. To say the least, it was quite an adventure!
