Trip Type: Day Trips/Base Camp
GLSKA CLassification: B2
Meet at the main park office in Killbear Provincial Park at 11:00 on Friday, May 22. Killbear PP will be our base for day trips exploring some of the numerous bays and islands in the Parry Sound area. Killbear PP is located on Georgian Bay in the Parry Sound District near the town of Nobel. Killbear PP combines sandy beaches typical of the Great Lakes with the rock ridges and pines of the Canadian Shield.
This is an opportunity to enjoy the comradery of group paddling combined with the luxury of car camping. Consider joining us if you are comfortable paddling in ½ meter waves and are capable of self-rescues. Novice paddlers are welcome; however, membership in GLSKA is required. If you do not have access to a sea kayak, consider renting one from Swift Canoe and Kayak in Waubaushene. Due to the water temperature of Parry Sound in May, wet or dry suits and clothing for colder and potentially inclement weather are required.
Two full days of paddling are planned for Saturday and Sunday with optional three hour paddling outings possible for Friday and Monday. In the event of foul weather, we can enjoy the Visitor Centre & Friends Nature Shoppe and walk the trails of Killbear Park.
Two tents will share each basic / non-electrical camp site. You are encouraged to bring a bug shelter, if you have one, because biting insects will be present. Drinking water and vault toilets are nearby and a comfort station equipped with showers is a ten minute walk or five minute drive from our sites. There is a modest per-night camping fee plus an additional parking fee charged by the Park. Fees will be collected in advance.
