Lake Superior Provincial Park area – Lake Superior: July 23-31, 2023

Trip Description:
We will meet at 4 pm on Sunday July 23 at the Rock Island Lodge, near Wawa, Ontario, and set up our tents in Naturally Superior Adventures camping area near the shore. We will dine together in the Lodge dining room and review our trip plans. Early the next morning, Monday, July 24, Naturally Superior Adventures will shuttle us, our kayaks and gear to our launch spot at the mouth of the Montreal River. If paddling conditions makes the paddle past the rocky shore north of Montreal Harbour inadvisable, we will launch from Lake Superior Provincial Park. From our launch spot, we will paddle back to our cars at Rock Island Lodge.

The trip itinerary allows for nine paddling days, two of which can be considered “weather days” where we camp at the same site for two nights in a row and participants can choose to stay on shore or paddle and explore nearby coves and islands. Officially designated and maintained campsites in Lake Superior PP have been reserved for our group.

This is a remote and undeveloped stretch of shoreline. The Chrismar Lake Superior Adventure Map describes the scenery as being “dramatic, varying from sheer cliffs to fine sand beaches to, at times, crystal see-to-the-bottom clear waters to the vast expanse of the world’s largest lakes. Much of the shoreline is rocky outcrop, boulders or cobble beaches ……”. With few exceptions, there is little shelter from the wind and waves. We may experience prolonged periods of strong winds and, because of extreme exposure to the elements, we could be land bound for days. If conditions warrant terminating the trip before reaching the Michipicoten River, we will all share the additional expense of a boat shuttle back to the cars.

Please note:
Camping, dinner and shuttle fees will be collected when trip applicants have been confirmed.
There will be no opportunities to resupply along the way.
Paddling, launching, and landing is a difficult endeavour in many areas along the Lake Superior PP. It is a spectacularly rugged coast with limited landing sites, stretches of coast where no landing is possible and rebounding waves due to rock bluffs.
Participants must be experienced wilderness campers, capable of self-rescues, and be comfortable paddling in 1 meter waves in moderate to strong winds and crossings of up to 5 km. Daily paddling distances vary between 20 and 30 km. Wet or dry suits are mandatory due to the cold-water temperatures of Lake Superior. Participants must have a willingness to paddle in fog, and an understanding of how quickly things can go tragically wrong in a very short time.
Participants are responsible for their own gear, food and transportation to and from Naturally Superior Adventures.
Additional information will be sent to participants.

GLSKA trip classification: C-3  (GLSKA Trip Classification)

C = Strenuous: Daily paddling typically more than 5 hours, with distances of 20 kilometers or more.
3 = Experienced: Requires advanced paddling, seamanship and rescue skills. Ability to handle waves greater than 1 meter. Expect exposed waters, open crossings, large waves and moderate to strong winds, surf, fog, and potentially difficult landings. Sheltered resting and landing spots could be few.
