Trip Description:
Starting out at Naturally Superior Adventures on the morning of July 21, we will travel north- west, exploring the coastline that has inspired many artists, voyageurs and explorers through the Superior Highlands, Pukaskwa National Park and onto Pic Island off Neys Provincial Park. Upon arrival to Prisoner’s Cove at Neys Provincial Park, we will load up and be shuttled back to our cars by Naturally Superior Adventures.
The south section of this trip is remote and isolated, bearing only decaying evidence of past human presence in ghost towns dotted between unlandable rocky headlands and isolated beaches. Wildlife roams freely here including moose, bears, otters, birds of prey, deer, cougars, lynxes and rodents. There is an extremely miniscule chance of seeing caribou near Pic Island. I have paddled this section many times before but get ‘surprises’ every time. Paddlers need to be on their toes and prepare accordingly. Cold and rough water is expected.
Please note:
Fees for this trip will include the shuttle fee, Pukaskwa National Park backcountry campsite fees, and final night at Neys Provincial Park.
Based on 6 participants, this will cost about $230/person.
Maps and individual paddler provisions extra.
Paddlers will all pack as if going solo for the 14 days, but will have the luxury of good company and helping hands from fellow paddlers should the need arise.
Although we are planning daily paddling distance of 18- 25 km, participants need to understand that we may be wind bound for days and thus need to ‘make up time’ by paddling some longer days or night paddles.
Paddlers need to be proficient at self and assisted rescues, surf launch & landings and paddling at sustained speeds of about 6 km/hr.
A non-refundable deposit will be required of the select trip participants in order to cover all reservation bookings.
GLSKA trip classification: C-3 (GLSKA Trip Classification)
C = Strenuous: Daily paddling typically more than 5 hours, with distances of 20 kilometers or more.
3 = Experienced: Requires advanced paddling, seamanship and rescue skills. Ability to handle waves greater than 1 meter. Expect exposed waters, open crossings, large waves and moderate to strong winds, surf, fog, and potentially difficult landings. Sheltered resting and landing spots could be few.
